Propane Safety Tips

Gosnold's Gas, LLC is a cylinder delivery service only, we will only leak test the tank and the connections that are made directly to the tank. For further service contact your trained propane service person.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU SMELL GAS!

  1. NO FLAMES OR SPARKS! Immediately put out all smoking materials and other open flames. Do not operate lights, appliances, telephones, or cell phones. Flames or sparks from these sources can trigger an explosion or a fire.
  2. LEAVE THE AREA IMMEDIATELY! Get everyone out of the building or area where you suspect gas is leaking.
  3. SHUT OFF THE GAS! Turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank if it is safe to do so. To close the valve, turn the handle to the right (clockwise).

  4. REPORT THE LEAK! From a neighbor's home or other nearby building away from the gas leak, call your qualified service technician right away. In case of a fire call 911 or your local fire department.
  5. DO NOT GO BACK INTO THE BUILDING until your trained service repairman has resolved the situation. Service or repairs to a propane system must be done by a trained propane service person. Do not attempt repairs.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU RUN OUT OF GAS.
If your propane home heating system runs out of gas, serious safety hazards, including fire or explosion can result.

  • If an appliance valve or a gas line is left open, a leak could occur when the system is recharged with propane.
  • If your propane tank runs out of gas, pilot lights on your appliances will go out. This can be very dangerous.
  • When we make a propane gas delivery to our customer WHO IS OUT OF GAS, we will install the new cylinder check the tanks and connections for leaks and shut off  tank valves. You will need to have your system and appliances checked by a qualified technician for leaks before turning on tanks.

PROPANE SAFETY TIPS
To readily recognize a leak, know what propane smells like. Propane has a strong, unpleasant odor, like rotten eggs, thanks to a chemical that is placed into the propane supply to help identify leaks.

Propane leak detectors, similar to carbon monoxide detectors, are also available.

If you smell a leak, immediately evacuate everyone from the building and call Gosnold's Gas at (401-965-3480 and your propane service person, or call the fire department from your neighbor's phone. DO NOT remain in the building, use the telephone or light switches or try to determine the source of the leak by yourself.

General Safety Reminders

  • Always keep flammable and combustible materials (e.g., paper, clothing, wood, gasoline, solvents) away from any open flames that originate from your appliances.
  • Know how to shut off the gas supply from your tank or cylinder. If you do not know how, contact us for instructions.
  • Never place your head near or directly over the valves on your storage tank. A sudden release of product from the safety relief valve could result in serious injury.
  • The propane liquid that is stored in your tank or cylinder can cause severe frostbite if it comes in contact with your skin or eyes.
  • Never store propane cylinders or containers inside any enclosed building.
  • Treat all propane gas odors seriously. Any odors may indicate a very dangerous situation.
  • Never assume that propane odor is only the result of your tank being near empty. If the odor persists, you may have a serious leak.

Water can damage the internal safety mechanism in the gas controls of an appliance. If you suspect that your appliance gas controls may have gotten wet (because of flooding, for example), have a trained technician replace them immediately.
